Nissan Europe has today issued a press release detailing the campaigns their three GT Academy graduates will be driving in the 2012 season. While last year we reported on a statement from Signatech Nissan’s team boss that Jordan Tresson would be joining Lucas Ordoñez at the team, Nissan’s announcement today says that Lucas has joined Greaves Motorsport. He will run an LMP2 campaign in the European Le Mans Series in their Zytek Nissan alongside Tom Kimber-Smith (who will be defending this title) and Alex Brundle. Lucas will also be driving the Le Mans 24 Hours for the team alongside Alex and his father Martin Brundle. |
Jordan will indeed be driving for the Signatech team in 2012 in the FIA World Endurance Championship and will also have a seat in the Le Mans 24 Hours. The newest European GT Academy graduate Jann Mardenboroughwill be again driving for RJN Motorsport in a season of the Blancpain Endurance Series, driving the new Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3. There is no news yet on the 2012 schedule for GT Academy USA graduate Bryan Heitkotter. The full Nissan press release may be read here. From GTplanet |

Ford Credits Games Like Gran Turismo for Increased Brand Recognition
US automotive giant Ford is the latest car manufacturer to acknowledge the effect that video games have on brand recognition and vehicle sales, particularly in the 20-30 demographic. In this November article in the New York Times, Ford cited research showing that the presence of their models in video games boosted brand awareness, brand loyalty and purchase intent by around a third, with gamers agreeing that certain models from the range were more fun to drive from their experiences in games alone. Since Ford’s official gaming debut in 1995 – with Sega Rally – they claim over 250 million copies of games with Ford models featured have shipped and with Ford a permanent fixture of Gran Turismo since the second game, 54 million of those games are Gran Turismo games. Ford even merited a cover car, with the iconic GT adorning the boxes of Gran Turismo 4, and has recently increased its PlayStation presence with a virtual showroom on PlayStation Home.
While the Times’ article also cites Honda and General Motors sources, this certainly isn’t the first time that Gran Turismo fans have heard car manufacturers citing games and Gran Turismo specifically for direct increase in sales. The first Gran Turismo game resulted in a six-fold increase in sales of TVRs in Japan while simultaneously being credited for the popularisation of the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the USA, eventually leading to cars being exported to that market. This is something of a double-edged sword for gamers, however. While we may be excited to see huge automotive corporations recognising the power of our hobby, it is merely as a marketing tool for them. Although many Gran Turismo fans clamour for the addition of older performance cars like the BMW E30 M3 or the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, buying old cars doesn’t lead directly to sales – though it may boost brand recognition – and they may be less interested in licensing a classic in place of a 2012 model in their showrooms today. Still, the gamers can hope – in the words of Gene Reamer of General Motors: by Famine GT planet |
iRacing Upgrade
iRacing has sent out an update. Hey Everyone, So you may have noticed the large download you had to perform last night to your iRacing software. Well the iRacing crew updated several cars and visual cues as well updates to the physics model to get iRacing that much closer to the real thing (how much closer can they really get?). Well here is a quick list of some of the things they did: The following cars received the New Tire Model. This helps balance the car out significantly and makes them much more fun to drive. • Star Mazda Additionally, they updated the tire model on the following cars: • Chevrolette Corvette C6R |
• Ford GT Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vivamus molestie placerat sapien, quis varius lorem sodales non. Cras et purus facilisis felis feugiat blandit vitae ut felis. One thing you may notice is your spotter has become chattier. Now they will update you on engine smoke, engine damage, and wheel damage, and pace car status, if cars ahead/behind are for position, information on the leader (pitting, ahead, etc.), if slow or stopped cars are on track, status of race (10 laps to go, race is over). The spotter will also try to warn about serving black flags before being DQ'd by the end of the race. Additionally they updated sounds, drafting, the brake model and some updates to the tracks which includes night racing on some of them. Check out this link for full details on what was updated. http://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/1841655.page Happy Racing! |

Thrustmaster T500 SLI Mounting System – Video
The guys over at SimRacingHardware.com have released a first video of their Thrustmaster T500 SLI Mounting System. Even though the T500 RS comes with plenty of high-end features like 1080 degree steering, the wheel lacks a display and rev-meter such as the Logitech G27′s. The SLI Mounting System changes that as it equips the wheel with a SLI display, rev-meter & and four rotary encoders. The mounting system uses the SLI-M or SLI-I displays, the mounting system alone sells for 69.95 British Pounds while a version including the pre-wired SLI display sells for 225 Pounds. |

GT Academy Winners Score Dubai Podium Finish
For the first time since the start of the Nissan GT Academy programme in 2008, Nissan entered an all-gamer car in the 2012 Dubai 24 Hours, pairing up four winners of the GT Academy competition. While GT Academy winners previously were assisted by experienced racing hands, this time the GT Academy guys were on their own and the experiment very well paid off as the GT Academy winners finished in an impressive 3rd in class, 26th overall. The #100 Nissan 370Z was driven by the winner of the first GT Academy Lucas Ordonez, who was joined by 2010 winner Jordan Tresson and 2011 winners Jann Mardenborough (GT Academy Europe) & Bryan Heitkotter (GT Academy North America). The GT Academy Nissan qualified 4th and ended up on the podium after 24h grueling hours of racing despite hitting a bunch of problems on the way, including brake issues & power problems caused by a blocked air filter. A great performance by the drivers and trouble for some of their opponents helped the team to a rewarding finish, much to the delight of the drivers.
“That was without doubt the weekend of my life,” said Mardenborough. “The only thing that compares to it is winning GT Academy last June. It feels like pure joy. This is just the first step for me and now I hope that my performance in Dubai can take me further.” “I’m so pleased that we got a good result in our first international 24 hour race,” added Bryan Heitkotter. “We’ve worked hard during the last six months to get to this point and I would say to anyone who wants this as much as I did that you can reach your goals if you focus on them and work hard.”
“This is a great moment,” said Ordoñez. “We have really proved that GT Academy works as to get four gamers to a podium finish at this race is amazing. I am very impressed with my new team mates who have only been racing for six months. They came here and were fast, consistent and didn’t make any mistakes.” “It was pretty tough in the car and 24 hours is a long time to have to hold it all together,” said second GT Academy winner, Jordan Tresson. “If any of us had made just one slip at any point during the race it could have been game over for us. I want to say well done to Jann and Bryan who were still bedroom gamers just one year ago.” The GT Academy car did not just have on-track success, the gamer car provide to be very popular at the event as well with plenty of photographers & camera crews following every stop of the car and MotorsTV & Radio Le Mans devoting a big part of their race coverage to the team. But the GT Academy is not just making a splash in terms of exposure, the concept also manages to give its winners a solid foundation for a racing career. While Mardenborough & Heitkotter are just at the start of their way up, Lucas Ordonez has smoothly progressed through the ranks, clinching the LMP2 title in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup last year. For 2012, Tresson will join the Spaniard in the prototype ranks, giving another GT Academy winner the chance to shine on one of motorsport’s biggest stages. |
rFactor vs rFactor 2 – Video Comparison
The graphical quality of rFactor 2 and whether the title is a significant step up in the graphics department has been much discussed in the sim community ever since the first previews have been released. If you haven’t made up the mind on this issue yet, now’s the time as NeedRacing have put together an interesting comparison video. The video shows the Renault Megane at Joesville Speedway, both in rFactor & rFactor 2, two simulations that are almost six and a half years apart in terms of initial release. |
