Nurburgring racetrack proposed for Las Vegas

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Germany's Nurburgring is possibly the most famous racetrack in the entire world. Not only does it host racing competitions, but it also provides the ultimate testing grounds for new cars and prototypes - manufacturers from around the world travel to Germany to test their cars. Speedway Motorsports wants to make some of those journeys a little shorter, by building an exact replica of Nurburgring just outside of Las Vegas.

The United States has plenty of racetracks of its own - in fact, Speedway operates eight of them - but it doesn't have anything the caliber of Nurburgring, largely considered one of the most difficult racetracks in the world thanks to about 16 miles (26 km) of twisting, hilly terrain. Unlike the enclosed stadium tracks in the US, Nurburgring is integrated into its rolling, wooded surroundings and even has a 12th century castle located inside its perimeter. So, it's like quintessential European countryside bottled up into one of the world's most demanding pieces of asphalt - it's no wonder it is famous the world over.

Speedway may not be able to duplicate the history or ambiance of the original racetrack, but it does plan to duplicate the turns and features of the track itself. Its track would be an exact replica of the original, located on 8,000 acres (3237.5 hectares) of land about 10 miles (16 km) from its existing Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The company doesn't have any plans to hold racing events at the proposed track - that's kind of what Las Vegas Speedway does - but the track would take on the role of a test bed for manufacturers and car owners, providing a much closer destination for US-based entities.

In a recent interview with Sirius XM Sports, Speedway CEO Bruton Smith said that he's already been in talks with Nevada's governor, the Bureau of Land Management and several German contacts, who are presumably connected to or knowledgeable about the original track.

If the project gets the go-ahead, Smith and company plan to work closely with German engineers, using photographs, aerial topography and other resources to replicate every curve and hill to a T.

Las Vegas seems like the perfect destination for a faux 'Ring. The city already has a history of both motorsports and the cloning of iconic European destinations like the Eiffel Tower and Colosseum. The greater state of Nevada has more public land than any other state except Alaska, so it's not like there's a lack of space.

While the dry, hot Nevada desert may contrast the Eifel Mountains where the original Nurburgring is located, it could work well for auto manufacturers. Manufacturers could conceivably use the track for hot-weather testing as well as performance testing. Smith even believes that German manufacturers like Audi and Mercedes-Benz would come overseas to use the track, because a Vegas location would allow for year-round testing, whereas the actual Nurburgring experiences cold, snowy winters.

Gran Turismo 5 – New Nordschleife Video

Monday, October 18, 2010

A very interesting new Gran Turismo 5 video has surfaced on Youtube, showing over half a lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the Toyota FT-86.

The video features some clean driving and shows us almost two thirds of a Nordschleife lap all the way from the start to the carousel.

Gran Turismo 5 will be bringing 1000 cars and over 60 tracks to the Playstation 3, including new features such as damage, weather and day/night effects. GT5 will be one of the first six Playstation 3 games to be available in 3D. The title will be out on November 2nd in the North & Latin America, the European & Japanese release will follow a day later with Australia wrapping up the release on November 4th.

Check out the video which has a 4 minute time limit versus the usual 2 minutes.

Driving the "Ring" to a Podium

Wednesday, June 02, 2010
We were all pleased with the team's success, 1 and 2 in class and seconds apart after 24 hours. I arrived a week before and did tourist laps in a Clio and a Megane (excellent car!). The track immediately seemed familiar and I had no anxiety finding my way round it - I knew the sequences of corners and what was over the next blind brow! I had an instructor for some laps on 2 different days who commented on how quickly I had adapted to the track.

The only surprises were the steepness of some of the ascents and descents which the simulator cannot show; also the narrowness of the track. On the NFS SHIFT I had used an Audi A3, and this proved to be a good match for the Megane. Speeds, gears and lines correlated pretty well.

In the race we used Honda Civic TypeRs, which were quite different from the Megane, with much firmer suspension, and different engine characteristics. The Hondas love revs, with gear changes at 8000 rpm. Surprisingly, the gears used in places were often 1 gear higher than expected, making it easier on the car and driver, with no loss of time. Getting used to the car and FWD was much more difficult for me than learning the track which was well and truly “entered” in my brain.

There is no question that the time on the simulator was valuable. At the race, the factory BMW team had 4 simulators in their marquee for the use of the drivers before they got in their cars for the next stint. What else can you say!

VisionRacer on the Podium at the Nurburgring 24 hour

Monday, May 31, 2010
For the second year VisionRacer has been used as a training tool for a the big race.  Last we assisted in getting another Team Kiwi Honda Civic Type R to a second.   Check out the forum for the report.

This year David Glasson who has never driven the "Ring" came to us early.  We started David on a program to learn the track.  From a personal point of view I know simulation works but its something which is hard to convey unless you "try and apply".  In flying its accepted a par for the course but driving has been slower to adopt.  Lets see what happens.

We started with GT4 an oldie but a goodie, then changed to Need for Speed: Shift when it became available.  We gave David the mission to turn as many laps as he could.  When  he came back after a couple of weeks reckoning he had is sussed out we upped the stakes and got him to count down from 1000 laps.  David turned at least 700.  He was confident, mentally, he had the track embedded in his memory.

Here is David's thoughts just prior to leaving.

“I depart for the Nurburgring 24 hr race in Germany on May 2nd. The race itself is on May 15/16, with practice and qualifying on the 2 preceding days. I have arranged 3 “training sessions” with a local company RSR Nurburg when the track is open to the public during the week before the race. I will be using a Renault Clio which is the closest match to the Civic TypeR I will be racing.

I am practising every night on my VisionRacer with PS3 and Need For Speed Shift. I have now done at least 700 laps, and the track does seem familiar. While my main purpose has been to learn the corners, jumps, brows, ascents and descents, it has been good to develop a line and bring my lap times down. I use an Audi A3 and have a fastest time of 7mins 54 secs. It will be very interesting to find out how the virtual experience translates to the on-track one.

Kiwi Team Nurburgring has an excellent website www.ktn.co.nz (http://www.ktn.co.nz). The cars are specially prepared Type Rs, with modified clutch, diff and suspension. Engine and gearbox are standard and have proven reliable in the past. Reliability, and avoiding damage are key elements to success in this difficult event. Max speed is 230 – 240 kph.

I was skeptical about the use of a driving simulator, and I have never spent more than a few minutes on a PS in the past. Once I got used to the lack of G force feedback through the seat that you get in a real car, I could really appreciate the amazing technology and accuracy of the track simulation, and the real driving experience gained from the images and steering wheel feedback. It does give a level of confidence before driving the Nordschleife for the first time.”
more to come

As many of you know, the father of the Gran Turismo series was competing in the Nurburgring 24 Hours race also.  We will check his final standing also.

Nürburgring at Night Confirmed for Gran Turismo 5

Friday, May 28, 2010

There’s some good news confirmed in a new article from Auto Express – a “secret” demo was apparently at last weekend’s 24-hour race, which showed the Green Hell at night. They were also able to confirm that the race-spec Lexus IS-F which Yamauchi drove in the event will be included in the game:

The article still does not confirm a dynamic, changing day/night cycle, and it’s interesting that they specified only the “latter” circuit, or the Nordschleife, can be driven at night.
"The V8-powered saloon will appear in the new game – which Owen got to try during the event. Our man took the controls of a Sony PlayStation 3 to sample the complete Nürburgring 24 Hours circuit – for the first time in video game history. And he even got to try the new night racing feature. Plus, for the first time, gamers will be able to fully experience the Nürburgring, recreating the 24 Hours race, which uses both the grand prix track and the 15.2-mile Nordschleife. The latter – dubbed Green Hell – can also be driven at night, to get an idea of what the pros go through during one of the world’s toughest races."

GT5 Japanese footage

Friday, March 12, 2010

Following the NASCAR trailer release, two new preview videos of Polyphony’s Gran Turismo 5 for the Playstation 3 have surfaced.

The first, taken at the Nissan Gallery in Nagoya, shows the Nissan GT-R Super GT race car at Tokyo and the GT-R road car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in silky-smooth 60fps 720p HD resolution.   Ferrari's and McLarens going at each other!  We are in heaven.....  bring it ON!

The second gives us a first impression of the title’s driver animations, showing Subaru WRC driver Petter Solberg and his co-driver Phil Mills at work.

Gran Turismo 5 will be bringing 1000 cars and over 60 tracks to the Playstation 3, including new features such as damage, weather and day/night effects. There’s no date for either the release of the Japanese or the International versions yet.

GT 5 – Full lap of Nordschleife

Sunday, February 14, 2010

This is the first video of a full lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Gran Turismo 5, that shows a ride around the Green Hell from bumper cam view.

While the first video was filmed in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, this footage originates from the Nissan GT Academy finals. This results in neat driving as the driver obviously knows his way around the 16mile Nordschleife, driving the Nissan 370Z sports car.

Yep and coming to your home with head sensing and in 3D. Superb!

Nürburgring Nordschleife -"the Green Hell" at CES Las Vagas

Monday, February 01, 2010

The first shows a race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife from cockpit view as a Sony representative starts a lap in the green hell. Due to a strict 2:30 minute time limit on the demo, we shouldn’t expect videos of a full lap to be available anytime soon. The second video, once again, shows the sleek menu interface as the representative discusses the cars and tracks available in the demo. Once again this confirms that GT5 will indeed include more than 1,000 cars.

Gran Turismo 5 will be bringing 1,000 cars and over 60 tracks to the PlayStation 3, including new features such as damage, weather and day/night effects. The title has been announced to be released in March 2010 in Japan - dates for the US & Europe have not been given.
